Our time in Far North Queensland (FNQ) was absolutely magical. We spent two days in Kewarra Beach, 4 days in Fitzroy Island (40 mins ferry from Cairns), 2 days in Cape Tribulation (3hrs drive north of Cairns) and 4 days in Trinity beach.
FNQ is an absolute tropical paradise, we were here during the wet season so the beaches were a bit muddy and the killer stinger jelly fish in full effect so we had to wear stinger suit for swimming.
The drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation was very beautiful and on a windy road. It’s about 3 hrs drive and have to cross the Daintree river, with a lot of beautiful towns along the way. Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Trinity beach, Kewarra beach etc. There is also a nice zoo in Port Douglas that’s worth a visit. Cape Tribulation is a small town basically last town within civilization in Tropical North Queensland. Hiking, swimming in creeks and swim holes in rivers. There is also a lot of European back packers in Cape Trib.
Fitzroy Island is one of many islands of FNQ, its about 40 min ferry ride from Cairns. It’s a perfect place to go diving for the great barrier reef. There is a run-down hotel here so don’t make a mistake to stay over night. Just come for a day trip enjoy the beautiful beaches and barrier reef and go back to Cairns end of the day. Last ferry back is at 5pm.
There is also Kuranda village in the rainforest that is highly advertised, don’t fall for this tourist trap. The 2hours train ride is not worth it, too long and nothing exciting to see along the way. If you must go just drive up take about half hr on a very windy road.
Our time in FNQ was amazing and looking forward to come back some day.
Cheers,
Siti
